A chiropractor's education begins with at least two years of
undergraduate study at an accredited college or university. The
student focuses on the biological and basic sciences, such as
biology, chemistry and physics.
The next step is application to one of the 16 chiropractic
colleges in the United States and Canada. The colleges are
accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education.
The curriculum in the chiropractic college emphasizes life
sciences, health sciences and clinical studies on the diagnosis and
care of health problems. Basic science courses include many of
those taken by students of medicine - human anatomy, biochemistry,
physiology, pathology, public health, orthopedics, geriatrics and
dietetics. In addition to the intensive study, the student of
chiropractic specializes in courses on spinal evaluation, correction
and prevention.
During the four academic years (eight semesters) at chiropractic
college, a student spends 4,200 hours absorbed in study and clinical
training.
